This time a year more than ever traditions are very important. Traditions bring us together and provides the canvas to celebrate Thanksgiving and the magic of Christmas.
Yesterday I was part of a tradition that for years I had wanted to be a part of and I was able to share it with my nieces and sister-in-law . In Puerto Rico, Christmas stars very early and ends very well after January 6th.
Since I am still in Puerto Rico helping my parents I was able to go with my nieces and their mom to Plaza Las Américas. This is one of the biggest shopping centers of Puerto Rico. They were having yesterday the official start of Christmas and were lighting up their decorations.
I know it might sound silly but hundreds of people gathers around the main tree and they all come with their kids to watch the spectacle. I have always wanted to be a part of this and to rejoice with all my fellow Puerto Rican the beginning of the Christmas festivities. My ni ves had a blast!
Our family traditions are very important around this time a year. We gather as a family to have fun, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company. It is during Christmas time when I miss more my family and friends. Sadness sometimes gets a hold of me.
Today I am grateful because I will spend Thanksgiving Day with my family in Puerto Rico, although I will be missing my husband and my dog Pepper like crazy. There is never complete happiness and that is a fact of life.
Thanksgiving Day we will first go to my Dad’s family to have an early dinner. Catching up with the cousins, aunts and uncles over a delicious meal is the best. Then we will go over my Mom’s family and will have a late dinner! Obviously, food brings us together, it provides the setup for good conversation and for the making of new memories.
That’s why I’m thankful for the traditions we have. I’m looking forward to keep them up and to create new traditions for years to come.
Happy traditions
